Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is likely to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections, according to sources cited in various media reports. This could trigger a major political transition in the state and potentially bring an end to his long tenure as the state’s chief minister.
With his nomination, the chief minister’s seat will be vacated. In such a scenario, two names have emerged as the key contenders for the top post, reported HT.
Political observers claim the development could pave the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to claim the chief minister’s post in the state for the first time since the formation of the NDA government there.
Samrat Choudhary and Nityanand Rai are the likely contenders for the chief minister’s seat, according to the HT report. Choudhary is also one of the deputy chief ministers in the state. From his term as a Panchayati Raj Minister to currently in his second stint as deputy chief minister, he had held important posts in the government.
Rai is currently serving as the Minister of State for Home Affairs. Rai had served as the BJP president for Bihar and is a four-time MLA from Hajipur. He had also served as an MP from Ujiarpur.
According to reports, have claimed that Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar may also be inducted into the Bihar cabinet. Nishant is set to join the Janata Dal(United) on Thursday, reports claim. He may be inducted as a deputy CM, reports claim.
