New Delhi: NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) has commissioned Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to construct a 2,400 MW thermal power project in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district.

The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract was awarded to the largest engineering and manufacturing enterprise after a competitive international bidding process. BHEL’s role in this project is comprehensive, covering engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, and commissioning of essential components such as boilers, turbines, and generators.

In a regulatory filing at exchanges, NLC India said the 2,400 MW pit head power project, comprising three units of 800 MW each, will come up in Jharsuguda district based on Ultra Super Critical Technology. Additionally, the project will feature Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to align with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s guidelines.

The State-owned firm further said that the entire power output of 2,400 MW has already been secured through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with the states of Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Kerala, and Puducherry. The coal linkage for the project is sourced from the 20 MTPA Talabira II & II OCP mines of NLC India Ltd in Jharsuguda and Sambalpur districts.

The required water for the project will be drawn from Hirakud Reservoir, while the power generated will be efficiently evacuated through the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) and State Transmission Utility (STU) Network.

A key highlight of the project is the incorporation of biomass co-firing in boilers in alignment with green initiatives outlined by the Ministry of Power, highlighting its commitment to environmental sustainability.

Scheduled for commissioning in the financial year 2028-29, this pit head thermal project aims to provide competitive and low-cost power to its beneficiaries, the exchange filing added.

According to BHEL, the equipment for the project will be manufactured at its Trichy, Haridwar, Hyderabad, Jhansi, Bengaluru, Ranipet, Bhopal, Rudrapur and Varanasi plants. “The order size is in excess of Rs 15,000 crore excluding taxes & duties,” it added.
