New Delhi: Taking a note of US President Donald Trump’s announcement of 25% tariffs on Indian goods, New Delhi on Friday said it was reviewing the move. Not just that, it also chose not to respond to the US President’s taunt about Pakistan potentially selling oil to India. “We have nothing to say,” said Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

“…Who knows, maybe they’ll be selling oil to India someday!” Trump had said while announcing a trade deal with Pakistan on Thursday. The US President had stated that it would jointly develop its oil reserves.

India stood by its decision to purchase oil from Russia. India stated that its choices are guided by the prevailing global scenario to secure the country’s energy needs.

“Our ties with any country stand on their merit and should not be seen from the prism of a third country. As far as India-Russia relations are concerned, we have a steady and time-tested partnership,” Jaiswal stated.

“In securing our energy needs, we are guided by what is on offer in the markets and by the prevailing global circumstances,” Jaiswal mentioned in a statement.

The minister was asked about a recent Reuters report stating that Indian state refiners had stopped buying Russian oil in the past week. To this, the minister replied: “We are not aware of anything about this.”

Jaiswal also highlighted that the India–US ties have weathered many storms in the past. The MEA, however, said both sides are “confident that the relationship will continue to move forward.”

“India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties. This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges. We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to…,” Jaiswal added.
