Melbourne: Australian Federal Police (AFP) have identified a “young person” who posted an online threat targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his visit to Australia, and issued the individual a formal warning.
The Indian PM, who will fly to Australia from Indonesia on July 8 for a three-day visit, is scheduled to take part in the ‘Melbourne Meets Modi’ community event at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on July 9.
A threatening comment was posted beneath a Facebook post promoting Modi’s community event.
The online threat prompted a police investigation, and authorities confirmed they had identified the source of the post and spoken to the individual concerned.
In a written statement to The Australia Today, Australian Police said it did not identify the individual but reiterated that it treats threats against federal parliamentarians, high office holders and international dignitaries seriously.
“There is no current or impending risk to the community. Following an assessment of the matter, the young person was issued a formal warning,” AFP said.
The Australian Today reported that the matter was brought to the AFP’s attention on the same day the threatening comment surfaced online.
PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during his visit.
