Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday delivered a strong message on terrorism during wide-ranging discussions with his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim, declaring: “No double standards, no compromise.” The firm stance came as India and Malaysia unveiled initiatives to deepen cooperation in defence, security, semiconductors, and trade, reinforcing their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Modi, on a two-day official visit, arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday to a grand red-carpet reception by Ibrahim at the airport. He received a ceremonial welcome at Perdana Putra this morning ahead of the bilateral meeting.
“India and Malaysia share a special relationship. We are maritime neighbours with centuries-old people-to-people ties,” Modi said, emphasising Malaysia hosts the world’s second-largest Indian-origin population. “Our civilisations, shared cultural heritage, and democratic values bind us.” he added.
Modi said both sides will strengthen cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and maritime security. “We will also make defence cooperation more comprehensive”, he said.
The prime minister also touched upon India’s approach towards the Indo-Pacific. “The Indo-Pacific region is emerging as the growth engine of the world,” he said.
The prime minister said India is committed to development, peace and stability across the entire Indo-Pacific region together with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations).
Ibrahim praised India’s “spectacular rise” in global trade and economics. “Collaboration will intensify in trade, investment, connectivity, and defence”, he said.
