Bhubaneswar: Excess floodwater of Hirakud Dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur district continued to be released through 20 gates on Sunday as water level of the reservoir stood at 621.95 feet against full capacity of 630 feet.

The inflow and outflow of water into the dam, which was 3,88,932 cusec and 3,55,793 cusec earlier this morning, has dropped to 3.5 lakh cusec, Engineer -in- Chief of the State Water Resources Department, Bhakta Ranjan Mohanty informed.

“There if no flood threat for Odisha. The water level in the river is receding at all places in the state. The discharge at Khairmal and Baramula is 4.78 lakh cusec and 3.96 lakh cusec, respectively, while it has receded to 2.61 lakh cusec at Mundali. There are no plans to open more gates of the dam as of now,” he said.

Source said the intensity of rain is also decreasing in the neighbouring state and there is no rain warning.

On Saturday, eight sluice gates were opened in view of rise in inflow of water, taking the total to 20. The water level of Hirakud reservoir stood at 621.06 ft with inflow of over 4.70 lakh cusec. Over 2.23 lakh cusec of water was then being released through 20 gates of the dam.

Notably, the authorities had opened 8 gates on Friday taking the total to 10 as Chhattisgarh opened all 64 gates of Kalma barrage following heavy rain in the upper catchment areas.
