Bhubaneswar: A state government communication says that none of its institutes, except VSSUT Burla, participated in the recently-announced nationwide ranking of higher education institutes by the human resource development ministry.

The Skill Development and Technical Education department in Odisha has sought responses from eight institutes across the state, within a week, explaining why they failed to figure in the ranking list.

As per a letter of the SD & TE department, notices have been issued to BPUT Rourkela, IGIT Sarang, CET Bhubaneswar, PMEC Berhampur, GCE Kalahandi, GCE Keonjhar, IMIT Cuttack and CIME Bhubaneswar.

“The MHRD has recently published NIRF rankings, 2019. It is observed that neither BPUT nor any of its constituent/affiliated government engineering/professional colleges find a place in the said ranking,” the letter said.

Earlier on June 13, 2018, these institutions were asked to prepare a time-bound roadmap for participating in the NIRF ranking process. “However, no response in this regard has been received from any college/university in this department till date. Rather to make matters worse, none of our government technical/professional institutions, except VSSUT, even participated in the recently-concluded annual NIRF ranking process,” the letter said.

Only five educational institutes from Odisha were ranked in the annual ranking list 2019 prepared by the HRD ministry.

Bhubaneswar-based Siksha O Anusandhan University has secured the 41st place in the overall ranking list. IIT-Bhubaneswar was ranked 46th place and KIIT is at the 50th place. In the engineering discipline, NIT Rourkela topped the list in Odisha, securing 16th position.

IIT-Madras had taken pole position in the ranking, followed by Indian Institute of Science. IIT-Delhi ranked third.
