Puri: Shree Jagannath Temple in Odisha’s Pilgrim Town of Puri will remain out of bounds for devotees for four hours from 6 pm on Monday for ‘Paita Lagi’ Niti (sacred thread ritual) on the auspicious occasion of Baisakh Krushna Chaturthi.
On Monday, the 6th April 2026, Baishakha: krushna Chaturthi tithi, the Paitalagi Niti of the Holy Deities will be performed. Therefore, after the completion of the Second Bhog Mandap offering, public darshan will remain temporarily suspended from 6 pm to 10 pm,” the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration informed through a post on X.
Devotees have been requested to plan their visits accordingly.
According to temple traditions, the Daitapati servitors — hereditary priests entrusted with secretive and intimate services to the deities — will perform the ritual inside the sanctum sanctorum after the second Bhogmandap offering. The deities are adorned with specially prepared sacred threads, often accompanied by the application of sandalwood paste and covering the forms with a special silk cloth known as Basunga Patta, symbolising divine protection, purity, and the renewal of spiritual energy.
Public darshan of the deities is suspended during this period to ensure the ritual proceeds without interruption.
