Cuttack: A 12-hour bandh is being observed at Athagarh in Odisha’s Cuttack on Wednesday over a long-standing demand for district status.
The bandh, spearheaded by the Athagarh District Action Committee from 6 am to 6 pm, brought normal life to a standstill, with shops, markets, schools and transport services largely paralysed. The protest, which saw support of locals in Athagarh, has reignited the debate over administrative restructuring in Odisha.
The demand for Athagarh to be recognised as a separate district has been gaining momentum for years. Locals argue that the region’s unique identity, population size and administrative needs justify district status. Protesters believe that the current arrangement under Cuttack district sidelines Athagarh’s development priorities, leaving residents deprived of adequate infrastructure, healthcare, and educational facilities.
The bandh paralysed Athagarh, with major roads deserted and public transport services suspended. Shops and business establishments remained closed, while schools and offices reported thin attendance..
Authorities closely monitored the situation throughout the day to prevent any untoward incidents. Police deployment was increased at sensitive points, and officials maintained constant communication with protest leaders. The bandh has remained largely peaceful, with no reports of violence or clashes.
