Bhubaneswar: Thunderstorm activity is likely to continue in many parts of Odisha for four more days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Most parts of Odisha received considerable relief from heatwave as nor’wester with varied intensity of rain continued to sweep the state in the last few days. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail in many areas till May 7, the weather agency said.

In its midday bulletin, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar issued an orange warning for eight districts till the morning of May 7. Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph and hailstorm, heavy rain may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada districts.

This apart, yellow warning was sounded for several other districts for the period. Thunderstorm with lightning, gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places of Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Nabarangapur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, and Ganjam.

Similarly, thunderstorm with lightning, gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Puri, Khurda, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, and Balangir districts.

On May 4-5, an orange warning was issued for five districts – Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Gajapati and Ganjam. Thunderstorm with lightning, gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph and heavy rain may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places of these districts.

Yellow warning of thunderstorm, lightning, gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph in the afternoon/evening hours was issued for the districts of Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapada.

2) Thunderstorm with lightning, gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangapur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada.

Likewise, thunderstorm with lightning, gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places of Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, and Balangir districts.

On May 5-6, thunderstorm with lightning, gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts where a yellow warning was issued.

Thunderstorm with lightning, gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur.

On May 6-7, a yellow warning was issued for several districts. Thunderstorm with lightning, gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.

2) Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours in some places of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Nabarangapur, and Kalahandi districts.

The weather agency said there will be no large change in maximum temperature (day temperature) during next 4-5 days and thereafter the mercury is likely to rise by 2 – 3°C in the state.
