New Delhi: Did the Congress engage in a bit of ‘video clip chori’ in its ongoing ‘vote chori’ campaign? Actor Kay Kay Menon has said that a short clip of his video clip, portraying him, was used in the online campaign by the party without his knowledge or consent.
Menon, who played the role of intelligence officer Himmat Singh in the recently released Special Ops 2, has made it clear that he is not part of the campaign in any way.
The Congress shared a video on its official Instagram that starts with Menon saying: “Ruko Ruko Yaar. Scroll Karna Bandh Karo. Agar Aap Ye Reel Dekh Rahe Ho To Iska Matlab Kya (Wait, Stop Scrolling. If you are watching this reel then what does it mean).”
This was part of a promotional video for Special Ops 2. The Congress has not only used the clip but a part of the caption reads: “Himmat Singh Kuchh Kah Rahe Hai, Jaldi Se Kar Aao (Himmat Singh is saying something, do it quickly)!”
Menon has reacted to this and said: “Please let it be noted that I have not acted in this ad. A clip from my Special Ops promotions has been edited and used without any permission.”
This is bound to cause some embarrassment for the Congress that launched a web portal for people to register and demand accountability from the Election Commission of India (ECI) against what it calls “vote chori”, and express support for the demand for digital voter rolls.
Party MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has been saying that the ECI has been indulging in “vote chori” and is “is doing it for the BJP.”
On Monday, Rahul said the campaign has turned into a “massive mass movement” with more than 15 lakh support certificates downloaded and over 10 lakh missed calls received since the launch of the portal.
Menon acted in Special Ops 2 alongside Parmeet Sethi. This season of the show also stars Prakash Raj, Vinay Pathak, Karan Tacker, Saiyami Kher, Muzammil Ibrahim, Gautami Kapoor, and Kali Prasad Mukherjee. Special Ops 2 released on JioHotstar on July 18.
