Berhampur: A dreaded criminal, Sunil Nahak, was injured in an encounter with Golanthara police in Odisha’s Ganjam district in the early hours of Saturday.
This is being seen as a significant breakthrough amid a surge in criminal activities in Berhampur and other parts of the district.
Sunil sustained bullet wounds in his left leg. He has been admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. “One of his associates managed to escape, but will be nab soon,” said Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M.
The encounter took place when a police team attempted to apprehend Sunil, a resident of Kabisurya Nagar, and his associate at Pitatali on Chikiti-Pitatali road. The duo was riding a motorcycle. Golanthara police had already erected a blockade at Pitatali early in the morning after receiving information about Sunil’s movement in the area. Sunil fired two rounds when he was asked to surrender. Police shot five rounds in self-defence and two of them struck Sunil in his left leg.
The SP said that a country-made gun and some live bullets were seized from Sunil. It is suspected that he used the same gun while snatching a gold chain from a woman in Nimakhandi. “We have sent the bullets to the state laboratory for scientific examination,” he said.
Sunil is allegedly involved in murder, bomb attack, extortion and gold snatching cases. “We will forward him to court soon after he is discharged from the hospital,” the SP added.
