Bhubaneswar: Notorious criminal Raghu Biswal was nabbed by the police following an encounter in Bhubaneswar. Raghu sustained bullet injury in the encounter with Mancheswar Police and Special Squad in the wee hours of Thursday.
However, Raghu’s close associate Punia Nayak managed to escape from the spot during the exchange of fire, police said. Efforts are on to trace him.
Raghu has 15 cases, including eight involving shooting, against his name in several police stations. He is reported to be an active member of the Ravi Rao gang.
Acting on a tip off about the presence of Raghu and his associate, Mancheswar police and special squad launched an operation and sotted the duo roaming around the Bali Yatra ground.
The police team intercepted the two and asked them to surrender. As the two criminals tried to flee without stopping, the police personnel chased them.
However, the two opened fire at the police. In retaliation, the police returned fire in which Raghu sustained a gunshot wound on his left leg. A pistol and a bike have been recovered from the site.
Raghu was first taken to Capital hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment.
