Now, A Movie On India’s 2007 T20 WC Win; Who Will Play Captain MS Dhoni?

The story of India’s historic ODI World Cup triumph in 1983 has already been made into a full-length feature film. The Kabir Khan-directed movie, in which Bollywood superstar Ranveer Singh has played the role of captain Kapil Dev, is awaiting release since last year.

Team India had to wait 24 years for their next World Cup success, this time in the T20 format. A young Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had just taken over as India captain, led the team to victory in the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa.

On the 14th anniversary of that momentous win against Pakistan in the final comes the announcement that the journey of Dhoni and his boys in that tournament will be the subject of a movie.

Titled ‘Haq se India’, it will be the London-based One One Six Network’s maiden project and will be released on OTT platforms.

The first question that springs to every cricket enthusiast’s mind is who will play Dhoni, who was 26 years old then?

One One Six Network CEO Gaurav Bahirwani, who has joined hands with London-based stock specialist Jaideep Pandya for the ambitious project, are yet to zero in on the film’s main character.

Had Sushant Singh Rajput been alive, his name would surely have been discussed for the role. Sushant – who was found hanging from his Mumbai residence in June last year — had, after all, done a fantastic job as Dhoni in the Neeraj Pandey-directed 2016 biopic ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story.’

Mumbai-based filmmaker Saugat Bhattacharya will be helming ‘Haq se India’, but we have to wait for a while to find out who plays Dhoni in this new film on cricket and whether he does justice to the role, like Sushant.

Kabir Khan’s ‘83’, depicting the fairytale run of Kapil’s Devils in the World Cup 38 years ago, was initially supposed to be released in 2019. Production work got delayed and the release date was rescheduled to April 2020, then December 2020 and subsequently the first quarter of 2021.

The second wave of COVID-19 pandemic scuppered those plans and the makers are waiting for theatre occupancy to improve before finalizing a revised date.
