Balasore: The nuclear-capable strategic ballistic missile Agni-4 was successfully test fired in Odisha’s Balasore District on Sunday morning, sources in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said.
The test was carried out from the launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Dr Abdul Kalam Island (formerly known as Wheeler Island).
The user-trial of the missile was conducted by a mobile launcher at 8.30 am.
This was the seventh user-trial of the missile which has a strike range of 4000 km.
The 20-meter-long surface-to-surface missile weighing 17 tonnes is equipped with modern and compact avionics to provide high level of reliability.
The most accurate Ring Laser Gyro based Inertial Navigation System (RINS) supported by highly reliable redundant Micro Navigation System (MINGS) ensures the vehicle reaches the target within two digit accuracy.
The re-entry heat shield can withstand temperatures in the range of 4000 degree centigrade and makes sure the avionics function normally with inside temperature remaining less than 50 degree centigrade.
