Baripada: Noted lyricist Sangram Keshari Mohanty, known for popular Odia film songs like ‘Kahana E Phula Kahana’ and ‘Jhuma Jhuma Golapi Belare’, passed away at his residence in Bhanjapur here on Tuesday. He was 78.
Mohanty, who had been ailing for a long time, breathed his last in the morning, family sources said. His last rites were performed at Barunei Ghat.
Born on January 27, 1947 in Baripada, Mohanty was a renowned name in the Odia music industry. Son of former MLA Harihara Mohanty, he had earned recognition as a lyricist from the All India Radio, Cuttack in 1971. He churned out numerous lyrics for All India Radio, Door Darshan as well as the Odisha film industry.
He had written lyrics for a large number of songs in Odia films, albums, and radio programmes. His notable works include the iconic songs Jhuma Jhuma Golapi Belare from the film Abhilasha and Kahana e Phula Kahana from Phula Chandana.
Apart from these, Mohanty had also penned lyrics for ‘Mo Mana Khali Tori Pain’ directed by Gouri Shankar Das and ‘Tume Hni Sathi Mora’ directed by Surendra Mohanty, both composed by Saroj Patnaik.
A pall of gloom descended on Odia music circles following his demise. A number of his admirers including distinguished personalities visited his residence and offered tributes to the departed soul.
