Bhubaneswar: Uproarious scenes marked the beginning of proceedings in the Odisha Assembly on the 5th day of the monsoon session as opposition members staged noisy protest demanding withdrawal of MMDR amendment.
As soon as the House assembled for the day, members of Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) trooped into the well and protested neat the Speaker’s podium.
Following the story start, Speaker Surama Padhy adjourned the House till 11.30 am just six minutes after the commencement of the proceedings.
The sudden adjournment followed strong opposition from the BJD and Congress benches, leading to disruption in the House.
It may be noted that the opposition Congress and BJD have also been protesting against the MMDR Amendment Act in the Assembly, leading to repeated adjournments of the House since the beginning of the Monsoon session.
The MMDR Amendment Act has turned into a major headache for the state government, as the Opposition seems to be in no mood to back down.
Meanwhile, the BJD is all set to organise an agitation in Bhubaneswar demanding the immediate repeal of MMDR amendment. On the other hand, the congress-led INDIA bloc is also scheduled to stage a Odisha Assembly gherao protest in Bhubaneswar on September 29 against the MMDR Amendment Act.
