Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Thursday released a helpline number to assist commuters facing difficulties due suspension of public transport services and road blockades following the 12-hour Odisha Bandh call by the Congress over the death of FM College’s student.

Police have assured necessary assistance and urged people to use the helpline 0674-254354 in case of emergencies or movement-related issues.

In Bhubaneswar, Congress workers blocked NH-16 near Vani Vihar, exacerbating traffic issues. Protesters were seen burning tyres on Acharya Vihar Road and urging people to cooperate at Master Canteen Square. Roadblocks were also put up at Khandagiri, Jayadev Vihar, and CRP Square.

Commuters too were left stranded in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack with bus services suspended early in the day. Autos and taxis were stopped at several points, causing inconvenience. People were seen walking with luggages in search of transport amidst delays and confusion over alternative arrangements. Government-run buses operated sporadically but mostly stayed off the roads.

The day also saw minor scuffles between security forces and Congress workers as the latter attempted to storm the railway station in the state capital.

The demonstration is being held to demand justice for Soumyashree Bisi, who died by self-immolation due to alleged sexual harassment by a professor of the college and subsequent institutional neglect. The incident has sparked statewide outrage with the Opposition demanding the resignation of of the state’s Education Minister, the local MLA, and the MP, over their alleged failure to act on the student’s complaint and ensure her safety. It has also sought a judicial probe into the incident and enhanced security measures for women’s safety in the state.
