Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal is likely to trigger heavy rain in some districts of Odisha till from October 1-3, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Sunday.

“A cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge into the north Andaman Sea on September 30. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over north & adjoining central Bay of Bengal around October 1,” according to the midday bulletin.

Thunderstorm activity is likely to continue in the state for 3 days.

The weather agency has issued an orange warning of thunderstorms, lightning and rain along with gusty wind at 30-40kmph for a few places in Bargarh, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts till 4.45 pm on Sunday (September 28).

Thunderstorm /lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati,Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal and Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj till Monday morning.

On September 29, there is a warning of thunderstorm /lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati,Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts.

Similar weather conditions may prevail on September 30 at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati,Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

On October 1, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may resume at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam.

Thunderstorm along with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely in the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

The IMD has forecast widespread rain the following day. Yellow warning of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph has been issued for the districts of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Nayagarh, Khurda and Puri.

Thunderstorm along with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Nabarangpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul and Dhenkanal.

On October 3, heavy rain may continue at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, and Bargarh districts.

Meanwhile, the water flow in the Mahanadi system has decreased, providing relief to people in low-lying areas. The Hirakud dam authorities had closed 14 gates and water is currently being released from 6.
