Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for securing a landmark trade agreement with the United States, which includes a significant reduction in tariffs on Indian exports.
In a post on X, CM Majhi described the development as “a historic advancement in India-United States economic relations, setting a strong foundation for deeper cooperation and shared prosperity.” He emphasised that the lowering of US tariffs to 18% on “Made in India” products represents a major win for Indian manufacturing, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), exporters, and employment generation.
The move, he noted, is expected to expand market access and create fresh opportunities for entrepreneurs and startups across the country.
“I extend my sincere congratulations and gratitude to PM Shri @narendramodi Ji for his decisive leadership and people-focused diplomacy, strengthening Indo-US ties and enhancing India’s global economic presence,” he added.
The agreement was announced by US President Donald Trump on Monday following a phone conversation with PM Modi. Trump stated on Truth Social that the US would reduce its reciprocal tariff on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, effective immediately. In exchange, he claimed India would move to eliminate tariffs and non-tariff barriers on US products, cease purchases of Russian oil, and commit to buying substantial volumes of American energy, technology, agricultural goods, coal, and other products—potentially exceeding $500 billion.
PM Modi responded positively on X, expressing delight that “Made in India” products would now face a reduced tariff of 18%. He thanked President Trump on behalf of India’s 1.4 billion people and highlighted the mutual benefits of cooperation between the world’s two largest democracies.
The deal follows years of stalled negotiations between the two nations, often hampered by disputes over tariffs, market access, and geopolitical issues.
