Bhubaneswar: Amid the ongoing debate over election of Congress President, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) on Tuesday pitched for Rahul Gandhi to take over as the new party chief.
Describing Rahul Gandhi as the best leader for the top post, OPCC President Sarat Pattanayak said Congress leaders and workers in Odisha are strongly in favour of Gandhi having Gandhi as the new AICC chief.
“For the last two months, I have been pressing for Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. On behalf of OPCC and all party leaders of Odisha, I request him to take charge as Congress president,” he said.
“Because of his dynamism, Rahul Gandhi is popular among people and party workers in Odisha are strongly backing him,” Pattanayak said, adding, “We all want Rahul Gandhi to lead the party.”
Regarding the Odisha unit of the party, the OPCC chief further said that the AICC president has been authorised to nominate all office-bearers and AICC members including the state president.
Notably, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor are the probable candidates to run for the upcoming party president elections if Rahul declines to join the race.
