“The programme will be executed for seven days and extended to other affected areas, including Satyabadi and Brahmagiri, in the district,” the DGP said.

The cops have been working tirelessly, assisting people in need, since cyclone Fani barrelled into the Odisha coast.

Social media is flooded with images of various volunteers and officials carrying out the evacuation before the cyclone made the landfall in Puri and among them was a photo of a female police officer of Talchua Police Station in Kendrapara carrying two other women on her motorcycle.

There were also images of a female officer carrying an elderly woman in her arms to a shelter home. Apart from helping the victims, the cops were also seen clearing roads for vehicular movement and providing free food to those displaced.

Government sources said over 1.4 crore in over 16,000 villages and 51 urban local bodies of 14 districts – Angul, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal and Keonjhar – have been affected.
