Odisha: Differently Abled Nuapada Man Dies Hours After Self-Immolation Bid; Tehsildar Suspended

Nuapada: A differently abled man from Odisha’s Nuapada district who was critical after a self-immolation attempt in front of the Tehsil office on Thursday over some land related issue, succumbed on Friday while undergoing treatment at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, in Sambalpur.

Meanshile, Nuapada sadar tehsildar Debendra Rout has been suspended by the administration following a police complaint by the bereaved family against him and the additional tehsildar. This was revealed by Collector Hemakanta Soy.

The deceased man was identified as Jagdish Chauhan of Kalyanpur village under Sadar Tehsil.

Grieving over his death, his family members had filed a police complaint against the tehsildar and  the additional tehsilar  sources said. On the other hand, local lawyers on Friday launched a sit-in protest outside the Collectorate against apathy of the revenue administration and demanded compensation to the bereaved family.

Jagdish had poured petrol all over his body and set afire. He was rescued by locals and immediately rushed to the district headquarters hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was later shifted to VIMSAR.

He was upset as some work related to land issues was stuck at the tehsil office. It was alleged that he had applied at the tehsil office for permission to sell off a patch of land, but work was not making headway. He was allegedly wearied from frequenting to the tehsil office.
