Odisha Elections 2024: BJD Suspends Former Talsara MLA Prafulla Majhi For Anti-Party Activities

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal has suspended former MLA from Talsara in Odisha’s Sundargarh district Prafulla Majhi for anti-party activities.

A press release issued by the BJD on Sunday stated that Majhi has been suspended from the primary membership of the party. The suspension order comes into effect immediately. Majhi was the senior general secretary of BJD.

Majhi was elected from Talsara three times as a Congress candidate. He had first won a bypoll from Talsara in 2006 and later, he won from the same seat in 2009 and 2014 Assembly elections.

Majhi quit Congress on December 6, 2021 and had joined BJD along with his supporters joined the BJD on December 10.

He entered electoral politics after the demise of his wife’s uncle Gajadhar Majhi, who had won the seat five times for Congress with the sole exception of 1990.

In 2024 elections, the BJP has renominated present Talsara MLA Bhabani Shankar Bhoi from the seat, while the BJD has gone for Binaya Kumar Toppo, who was its candidate in 2014 elections. The Congress initially named former captain of Indian hockey team Prabodh Tirkey as its nominee but soon replaced him with Debendra Bhitaria.
