Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has announced a major relief for vehicle owners and drivers by allowing compounding of certain traffic rule violations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, till July 31, 2025.

In a fresh notification issued by the Commerce and Transport (Transport) Department, the state Government has permitted offenders to settle challans for specific violations by paying reduced compounding fees. The decision aims to ease the backlog of pending traffic challans and promote voluntary compliance.

As per the notification, offences committed on or before July 31, 2025, under Sections 192-A and 194 (1) the MV Act can be compounded by paying concessional fines.

Under the revised rates, using vehicle without permit will attract a fine of Rs 5,000 instead of Rs 10,000.

Similarly, driving vehicle exceeding permissible weight will attract a fine of Rs 10,000 instead of Rs 20,000 and Rs 1,000 per tonne of excess load instead of Rs 2,000.

This initiative aims to encourage safer driving habits and efficiently recover outstanding fines. Vehicle owners can settle their pending fines at a reduced rate, avoiding future complications and legal action.

However, the Challans in respect of which Prosecution Reports (PR) has been submitted to designated Courts will not come under the purview of the Scheme.
