Bhubaneswar: A day after Odisha Minister of State for Home Tusarkanti Behera said in the Assembly that crime against women has been rising, the Home department released a White Paper on crime records in the state in 2021 on Wednesday.
As per the White Paper, total 1,55,420 criminal cases were registered across the state in 2021. Out of those, 1,49,232 cases were found to be true.
Total 1,06,283 chargesheets were filed during the year. The criminal cases included 1,394 murder cases, 2,826 loot, 552 dacoity, 10,983 road accidents and 2,220 riots.
The state witnessed 9 rape cases everyday on an average during the year. Out of total 3,327 rape cases filed, 3,244 were found to be genuine and chargsheets were filed in 2,335 cases.
The state registered 298 dowry-related death cases and 129 dowry-related suicide cases during the year. Total 4,949 dowry-related cases were registered.
There were also 21 exchange of fire incidents between security personnel and Maoists and police resorted to firing 23 times to maintain law and order during the year, the White Paper stated.
It also said 2036 cases of cyber crime were registered in 2021 and chargesheets were filed in 307 cases. While total 542 criminals were involved in the crimes, 425 were arrested from the state and outside.
In a written reply on Tuesday, minister Behera said on an average, 7 cases of rape, 16 cases of kidnap and more than 29 cases of disrespect/molestation to women were registered in the state everyday between 2020 and 2022. The cases have increased in 2021 against 2020, he added.
