Bhubaneswar: In a stern warning to college lecturers, the Odisha government on Saturday cautioned that strict disciplinary action will be taken against those skipping classes, engaging in gossip, or sitting idle during duty hours.

Sources said the Higher Education Department has directed institutions to closely monitor faculty performance to ensure accountability and improve teaching standards.

The Department made it clear that lecturers found neglecting their teaching responsibilities—whether by skipping scheduled classes, loitering, or indulging in gossip during college hours—will face punitive measures. The directive emphasizes that such behaviour undermines academic quality and student learning outcomes.

Officials clarified that disciplinary action could include salary suspension, compulsory retirement, or other penalties under service rules. The move is part of a broader crackdown aimed at raising the standard of higher education across government and government-aided colleges.

The government has instructed universities and colleges to identify underperforming faculty members and submit reports. Those consistently failing to meet teaching obligations may be subjected to premature compulsory retirement.
