Bhubaneswar: Senior IPS officer Suresh Dev Datta Singh assumed charge as Commissioner of Police (CP) of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack on Monday afternoon following a major reshuffle effected by the Odisha government in the state police.
A 1998-batch IPS officer of Odisha cadre, Singh was earlier posted as ADG (Operations) and tasked with an important responsibility to curb the Maoist menace in the state.
Known for his success stories during his distinguished career as a senior police officer, Singh happens to be a winner of the President’s Police Medal for distinguished service on the occasion of Independence Day 2024.
As he took charge as the twin-city police commissioner, people in the state, particularly those in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, will be eager to know more about the senior IPS officer.
Born on March 3, 1971, Singh hailed from a small village in Banda district of Uttar Pradesh. After initial education in the village school, he studies at the Government Inter College at Banda up to Plus II and then did his graduation from Allahabad University. While doing MA, he appeared for the UPSC examination in 1994 and got selected for Defence Accounts Service. During training for the service, he made a second attempt at UPSC civil services in 1997 and secured 134th position to become an IPS officer. He completed his MA after joining the service and later obtained PhD from BHU.

During interactions with the media in the past, the new twin-city police commissioner had given full credit for the success story to his father Ram Gopal Singh, a lawyer, who wanted to see him in the civil services.
His wife Dr Madhuri Singh, who has done her doctorate in Chemistry, taught in an engineering college. They have two daughters.
Soon after taking charge from Sanjeeb Panda, the new CP said he will soon review the law and order situation and prepare a road map with his team. Those approaching the police with any grievances will be treated properly.
He said people can approach Commissionerate Police freely. The Commissionerate Police is open to suggestions and take appropriate steps for course correction, said Singh, stressing humanitarian policing.
Singh further said that stern action will be taken against those challenging the law and order and creating nuisance in the society.
