Bhubaneswar: Reiterating the demand for the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Kendrapada Rasavali, three BJD MPs met Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal in New Delhi on Sunday.
The three BJD Rajya Sabha members, Munna Khan, Subash Singh and Mamata Mohanta, submitted a memorandum to the minister and requested him. They said conferring the GI tag on Kendrapada Rasabali will provide a distinct identity to this sweet delicacy as well as help branding it at the national and international levels.
The exquisite sweet, which traces its origin to the Baladevjew temple in Kendrapada more than 400 years ago, is a deep-fried patties of cheese soaked in thickened milk.
Several people in Kendrapada district depend on its sale for livelihood. However, due to poor marketing strategies and misuse of its name, Rasabali has failed to gain widespread recognition.
