Puri: The Odisha government is mulling over installing an anti-drone system to ensure safety of Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri from any possible terror attacks.
Speaking to the media, Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Friday said that the Odisha police will be urged to use the system if required. “It will help detect, track and neutralise unauthorised or potentially malicious drones. Funds for installing the system will be arranged through the temple administration,” he said.
In response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack that claimed around 26 lives, Odisha Police have intensified security measures to prevent similar incidents during Rath Yatra in Puri, scheduled for June 27 when around 500,000 devotees, pilgrims and tourists are expected to throng the pilgrim town.
Intelligence Director RP Koche has directed senior officers to bolster vigilance along Puri’s coastline and strengthen security at the high-risk 12th-century shrine.
In a letter issued Wednesday to all SPs, DCPs, and railway SPs in Cuttack and Rourkela, Koche emphasised the need for enhanced security measures due to the heightened threat perception post-Pahalgam. He called for increased marine patrolling, coordination with the Indian Coast Guard and Navy to prevent infiltration, and close monitoring of suspicious activities, including rental properties and regular checks of hotels and lodges.
Intelligence units are to remain vigilant during the festival, tracking potential threats and suspicious movements toward Puri. A multi-layered security strategy, incorporating AI-powered surveillance and heightened vigilance, along with public cooperation, is crucial to ensure smooth conduct of the event, the letter said.
It also stressed enhanced security coverage at railway stations, bus stands and other places of public gathering.
Odisha Police has assured that Puri will be under comprehensive security coverage, with personnel deployed at key locations such as the temple, chariots, parking areas, transport hubs, restaurants, and the nearest airport to ensure a smooth and incident-free Rath Yatra.
