Nabarangpur: In a shocking incident, a nursing student from Raighar block in Nabarangpur district allegedly attempted suicide after a youth reportedly leaked her private photographs on social media.
As per information, the B.Sc. Nursing student studying in Jeypore and residing in a hostel, consumed poison on Tuesday following the circulation of the pictures.
The accused, identified as Satyajit Sarkar, a B.Sc. Agriculture student from a neighbouring village, reportedly pursued her in one-sided affair.
Sources said the victim had gone to Jeypore market on July 13 when Satyajit allegedly assaulted her in public, causing visible injuries to her eyes and face. Though the matter was taken up with the Jeypore Town Police Station, no action was taken following a compromise.
On July 15, the girl lodged a complaint at the same police station and returned home with her guardian. However, Satyajit allegedly uploaded private photos and videos of the victim on social media soon after.
Unable to bear the humiliation and distress caused by the online circulation of her images, the girl allegedly consumed poison on Tuesday. The accused, who had been obsessively pursuing her despite her disinterest, allegedly uploaded the photos on social media, triggering public outrage.
The student’s family filed a formal complaint at the Raighar Police Station, prompting the cops to record the victim’s statement and launch a probe. However, the accused is yet to be apprehended.
As part of the probe, a police team visited Satyajit’s house on Tuesday night but he was not present. His father is being interrogated by the police in connection with the case, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Umerkote Subhendu Kumar Sabar told reporters.
Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the accused and special teams are on the job, he said.
Regarding the health condition of the girl, medical officer Dr Sarat Chandra Sethi said the nursing student is undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Nabarangpur and her condition is stable. She is under constant observation.
