Odisha Plans Eco-Friendly Adventure Tourism At Major Nature Destinations

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to introduce a range of low-impact adventure tourism activities across some of its leading ecotourism destinations, aiming to enrich visitor experiences while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Odisha Forest Department, will focus on adventure activities and infrastructure designed to minimise environmental impact and protect forest ecosystems.

According to Deputy Conservator of Forests (Ecotourism) Vivek Kumar, the first phase of the project will cover key destinations including Similipal, Satkosia, Mahendragiri, Jiranga, Deomali, Barbara, Hirakud, Bichitrapur-Kuldiha, Gandhamardan, Karlapat and Chandaka.

Proposed Attractions

The proposed attractions include high-rope adventure features such as zip lines, Burma bridges and commando nets, along with mountain biking trails and all-terrain vehicle tracks at locations where permissions are available. Archery facilities will also be introduced at selected sites.

To expand outdoor recreation options, the department plans to offer water-based activities such as kayaking, canoeing, boating and river crossing. Visitors will also be able to enjoy camping, walking trails, rock climbing structures and scenic viewpoints. Dedicated adventure zones for children are also part of the proposal, making the destinations more family-friendly.

Officials said eco-adventure facilities such as wall climbing, canopy walks and rowing have already been introduced at Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary, with similar models now planned for other ecotourism sites across the state.

Search for Agency

The initiative is expected to strengthen Odisha’s sustainable tourism portfolio while generating income opportunities for local communities involved in ecotourism management and operations.

Meanwhile, the Odisha Ecotourism Society has initiated the process of selecting a professional agency to implement the project. The agency will be tasked with installing and operating the required infrastructure in line with national and international safety standards and working closely with local eco-development corporations.
