Bhubaneswar: In an error that left Odisha’s Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) red-faced, a student of Ravenshaw Higher Secondary School in Cuttack was given 102 marks out of 100 in English paper in the Class 12 board examination conducted by the council.
The report card of the student shows him scoring 82 marks out of 80 in theory and full marks of 20 in internal assessment, taking the total to 102.
According to sources, the student was supposed to receive two grace marks in Mathematics but it wrongly got added to his English marks due to a computer error.
As per the standing rules of CHSE, grace up to three marks may be awarded to help students to clear the exams. In this case, he was awarded grace marks in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
However, the Mathematics marks got erroneously added to English score. Authorities claim it happened due to a computer error.
“One or two may have been added by mistake due to a software error. We have informed CHSE about this,” Principal of Ravenshaw Higher Secondary Chiranjeebi Mahapatra told a local news channel.
CHSE said it was the only instance of a wrong tally of marks in the results of lakhs of students declared so far. “This is a computer error, which will be corrected within seven days. Necessary corrections will be made before issuing the final certificate,” CHSE Examination Controller Prashant Kumar Parida said.
Stating that the report card was only provided immediate information and the correct marks will be shown in the final certificates. “The final certificate has not been issued yet. Necessary corrections will be done in the final certificate,” Parida said.
