Angul: Police on Sunday took the prime accused, Bisu Gochhayat, in the rape-murder of a 22-year-old woman to a forested area near Kuspangi village within Banarpal police limits in Odisha’s Angul district to recreate the crime scene.
Bisu was apprehended from a private factory in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, where he was working as a labourer, on Friday.
On April 26, the deceased, who worked in a private company in Bhubaneswar, boarded his auto-rickshaw to Talcher Road railway station. He then allegedly took her to the side of a canal, raped her and throttled her to death using her dupatta.
After she went incommunicado, her family members filed a complaint with Kaniha police station the following day. Her body was recovered on May 4 afternoon and soon CCTV footage of the woman boarding the auto went viral.
Angul police formed six teams comprising 2 additional SPs, 1 DSP, 4 inspectors, 5 sub-inspectors, 5 ASIs and 20 constables to trace the culprit. “We had planned an operation called ‘Cocoon’ to nab the suspect. As many as 14 people are involved in harbouring the accused. Two teams of the cyber cell worked round-the-clock at the district police office,” Angul Police said in a press release.
Bisu took complete precaution to conceal his identity and did not use mobile phones and rarely contacted his family and friends, police said.
