Odisha Police To Introduce NH Patrolling System To Check Road Accidents
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Police is likely to introduce a National Highway Patrolling System in association with State Transport Department to check road accidents on the National Highways due to over-speeding, informed Director General of Police (DGP) Rajendra Prasad Sharma on Tuesday.
He also said that the system would be launched on a pilot basis on five major stretches in Odisha. Later, it will be implemented on other NHs of the state, added Sharma at a Road Safety workshop organised by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Crime Branch (CB).
The fatalities in road accidents need to be reduced by 10 per cent every year as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court empowered committee, he said.
According to reports, the number of fatalities in road accidents has been increasing every year in Odisha. A total of 5,300 people died in road accidents in 2018 and 4,700 in 2017, said Sharma.
He also said the automatic traffic signalling system would be extended to other cities soon.
