Rath, a senior Congress leader of the district, was moving around the bus stand in the pilgrim town when the miscreants attacked him with bricks and glass bottles. Rath sustained injuries in head and face. The locals rushed him to the local hospital.

On being informed, a police team led by City DSP rushed to the spot. Later, Rath filed a complaint at Kumbharpada police station in the town regarding the incident.

It may be noted that the Congress had initially announced Sujit Mohapatra as its candidate for the constituency. But the party dropped him from the list and nominated Rath for the Assembly elections from the seat on Sunday.

Enraged over the change, some supporters of Mohapatra ransacked the party’s district office in the town on the day. Mohaptra also alleged that he was dropped by the party even after he had filed nomination papers due to a conspiracy within the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC).
