Odisha Rights Panel Seeks Report On Gangster Sheikh Hyder’s Death
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Monday sought a report on the death of gangster Sheikh Hyder in police firing from the department concerned within four weeks.
Taking suo-moto cognizance of the matter, the rights panel has issued notices to Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Odisha DG, Director General of Prisons and DCS, and Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police, an official release said.
The commission has referred to the news on his death in various publications which it has kept in record.
On July 24, police had resorted to firing after Hyder snatched an AK-47 gun from a cop and threatened them while being shifted from Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack to Baripada Circle Jail.
He received at least three bullet shots in the encounter near Simulia in Balasore district.
A case has been registered in this connection at Simulia police station under Sections 307, 353, 294, 506, 224, 392 and Section 27 of the Arms Act.
Earlier, Hyder’s wife Hasina Bibi had termed the encounter as fake and demanded an investigation into her husband’s death by an independent agency.
