New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Noting that Odisha is now shifting its focus from metal and mining sector, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday asserted that the state will soon become a major semiconductor hub in the country.

Addressing a press meet in New Delhi, the Chief Minister said that the state government is taking proactive steps to give a substantial boost to this emerging sector as semiconductor is set to play a significant role in all economic activities.

“I am confident that Odisha will soon emerge as a major semiconductor hub in the country after Gujarat,” said Majhi, who is on a four-day visit to the national capital during which he attended the SEMICON India 2025.

Stating that Odisha is in touch with major global players in the semiconductor sector, he said Information Technology Minister Mukesh Mahaling and top officials of the state are slated to visit Taiwan soon to explore business ventures and investment in this key sector.

Referring to the SEMICON India 2025, the CM said meaningful one-to-one talks were held with more than 20 companies during the mega event and they have agreed to set up ventures in Odisha.

Majhi said that the state government signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth Rs. 2,655 crore on the opening day of SEMICON India 2025. The MoUs were signed with TopTrack Hi-Tech PCB Pvt Ltd (Rs 1,005 crore) and Sancode Technologies Limited in technological partnership with Silicon Connect, Inari Amertron Berhad & APIRC Penang (Rs 1,650 crore).

This apart, discussions were held with global majors like Intel, Micron, Western Digital, Renesas, and Siemens, he said, adding that these engagements were a decisive step in positioning Odisha as a preferred global destination for the semiconductor and advanced electronics industry.

“With landmark projects under the India Semiconductor Mission, along with the Odisha Semiconductor Manufacturing & Fabless Policy 2025 and the Electronics Component Manufacturing (ECM) Policy 2025, we are committed to building a world-class ecosystem for innovation, manufacturing, and investment in semiconductors and electronics,” said Majhi.

This apart, the state government is all set to bring a separate policy on Skill Development as part of efforts to equip youngsters with necessary skills for employment. The aim is to promote useful learning, establish quality training standards and align skill programmes with industry needs.

Notably, Odisha’s Electronics & Information Technology (E&IT) Department participated in SEMICON India 2025 being held from September 2 to 4 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, through a dedicated Odisha Pavilion.

To accelerate growth, the Odisha government last month approved the Electronics Component Manufacturing (ECM) Policy 2025, offering additional capital subsidies — 25% for the first 10 large-scale projects and 10% for subsequent ones — over and above the Centre’s incentives. It also includes land allocation, rental assistance, electricity duty exemptions for 10 years and power tariff reimbursements.

As part of its Vision 2036 and 2047, the state has also announced plans to expand the World Skill Centre in Bhubaneswar and establish three new campuses focused on IT/ITeS, semiconductors, aerospace and marine engineering. Nearly 5,500 acre of land in and around the capital city for development of IT parks, towers and electronic manufacturing facilities under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
