Bhubaneswar: Many parts of Odisha are likely to be affected by widespread thunderstorm activity, lightning, gusty winds and rain over the next one week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.
As per the weather agency, prevailing weather conditions continue to be favourable for thunderstorms in several parts of the state.
In its midday weather bulletin, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar issued an orange warning thunderstorms with lightning, hailstorm and gusty winds (50–60 kmph) for Angul, Deogarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh districts in the next 24 hours.
Thunderstorms with heavy rain and gusty winds may also affect Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal.
The MeT Centre also issued yellow warning for Kandhamal, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Khurda, Puri, Koraput and Malkangiri districts during the period.
On May 6–7, rain/thunderstorms may continue across coastal and southern districts, with scattered activity elsewhere.
Yellow warning has been issued for several districts, with slightly higher intensity in Mayurbhanj.
On May 7–8, yellow warning was issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar districts.
On May 8–9, yellow warning was issued for Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur.
On May 9–10, rain and thunderstorms may occur in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak districts. The weather agency has issued yellow warning.
People have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid shelter under trees, unplug electrical appliances, and follow traffic advisories.
Squally weather with wind speeds up to 60 kmph is expected along the north Odisha coast on May 5, with rough to very rough sea conditions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
