Bhubaneswar: Come January 1, 2022, the Odisha government will no longer issue driving license (DL) and registration certificates (RC) in smart card and paper format. The DLs and RCs issued in smart card and paper document earlier will though be accepted as valid.
According to the amended Motor Vehicles Rules, the state government will issue DL and RCs in electronic self-printable PDF format for people’s convenience, reported The New Indian Express.
The Commerce and Transport department stated via a notification on Tuesday that a fee of Rs 140 will be charged in place of existing smart card paper for the electronic self-printable documents.
“As the DLs and RCs will now be provided in electronic form, the 2006 notification issued by Odisha government prescribing the fees for issue of various documents is now rescinded with effect from January 1,” the notification said.
The Odisha government had inked an agreement with New Delhi-based Smart Chip Ltd for the introduction of smart card-based DL and RC on Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis in 2006. The agreement that expired in July was granted an extension till December 31.
