Hampi: Body of a tourist from Odisha was fished out from a canal near the Sanapur Lake, close to the popular tourist destination of Hampi in Karnataka, on Saturday morning.
The young man, along with two male friends, was allegedly pushed into the canal, late on Thursday by miscreants, who also gangraped two women in the group.
According to the police, the Odisha youth had put up at a homestay near Hampi. He, along with two other male tourists from the US and Maharashtra, and a female tourist from Israel, decided to spend some time stargazing near the Sanapur Lake on Thursday evening. They were joined by the owner of the homestay, also a woman.
In her complaint, the homestay owner claimed that they were enjoying music near the Lake around 11 pm when three men on a bike approached them. They asked directions for a petrol pump. When the homestay owner said that there was no petrol pump nearby, the three allegedly demanded money from the group. They turned violent on being refused.
The three men, who allegedly spoke Kannada and Telugu, then assaulted the three male tourists and pushed them into the canal. Even as the tourists tried to get back to land, two of the miscreants gangraped the women, the homestay owner stated in her complaint.
“The two tourists from the US and Maharashtra are in hospital. The body of the third tourist from Odisha has been found after a prolonged search, with the help of sniffer dogs. The body has been sent for post mortem. We are looking for the accused, who seem to be locals,” a police official said.
