Odisha Train Accident: Court Extends CBI Remand Of 3 Accused For 4 More Days

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Special CBI Court has extended the remand of three accused in triple accident at Bahanaga Bazaar station in custody of the Central agency.

The CBI, which had obtained 5-day remand of the accused on July 7, had applied to the court to extend their remand for four more days. The accused, Senior Section Engineer (signal) Arun Kumar Mahanta, Section Engineer Mohammed Amir Khan and Technician Pappu Kumar, were forwarded to court after completion of their remand.

Meanwhile, Mahanta and Khan have applied for bail, while CBI on Monday summoned two more employees of the Indian Railways and interrogated them in connection with the train accident at Bahanaga in Balasore district.

The three accused were arrested on July 7 and booked under IPC Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence).

The inquiry report of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), South Eastern Circle stated that the accident took place due to lapses in the signaling circuit alteration at the North Signal Goomty (of the station).

On the evening of June 2, the Coromandel Express crashed into a stationary freight train at Bahanaga Bazar station and some of its derailed coaches colliding with Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express, leaving 293 dead.
