Balasore: Foul smell emanating from the site of the triple train accident at Bahanaga in Odisha’s Balasore district had triggered speculations about the possibility of presence of more bodies.
However, senior railways officials on Friday cetegorically ruled out the likelihood of the presence of bodies at the site of the mishap that took place on June 2, claiming the lives of 288 people and left more than 11000 injured.
The foul odour was because of the presence of more than 3 tonnes of eggs which were being transported from Bengaluru to Howrah in the parcel van, they said.
According to Chief Public Relations Officer of South Eastern Railway, A K Chaudhary, no dead bodies are left at the site where NDRF teams carried out thorough scanning at least twice. Site clearance was obtained from NDRF twice.
A search was conducted again along with the state government team when complaints about foul smell were received, he said, adding that the smell was because of the rotten eggs.
More than 3 tonnes of eggs, which had been loaded and being transported in Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express in the parcel van, were rotting and causing a bad smell, he said.
The eggs have already been removed and there will be no foul smell at the site, the official added.
