Bhubaneswar: The cyclonic circulation, which persists over south Gangetic West Bengal & adjoining Bangladesh, is likely to intensity into a low pressure area over the coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal & adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.

Under its influence, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely in Odisha from August 7-12. Isolated very heavy rainfall may also occur on August 7-8.

1. Red Warning

August 7 – 8: Issued for Mayurbhanj district, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected, along with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (> 204.4 mm).

2. Orange Warning

August 7 – 8: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm) is very likely at isolated places over 14 districts: Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Kataka, Sundaragada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Sonpur, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

August 8 – 9: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted for isolated places in Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj.

3. Yellow Warning

August 7 – 8: Heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115.5 mm) accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty surface winds (30–40 kmph) is expected at isolated places across Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada.

August 8 – 12: Scattered yellow alerts for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning continue across northern and coastal districts, including Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Sonpur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj.

Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40–50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmphmay also prevail along and off the Odisha coast on August 7-8. Sea conditions are expected to remain rough to very rough. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast during this period.

Local authorities have warned of potential localised flooding on roads, waterlogging in low-lying urban areas, temporary disruption of traffic, and minor damage to unpaved (kutcha) roads and vulnerable structures. There is also a risk of mudslides or landslides in hilly terrain, as well as riverine flooding in vulnerable catchments. Residents are advised to avoid waterlogged zones, monitor travel advisories, and stay away from weak structures.

The impending weather system comes on the heels of widespread rain across Odisha over the last 24 hours. Very heavy rainfall was recorded in isolated pockets of Kalahandi district, with Narla receiving 131 mm and Madanpur-Rampur recording 117 mm. Heavy rainfall was also logged across several other districts, including Balangir (Belgaon 115 mm, Salebhatta 103.4 mm), Kataka (Athgarh 112 mm, Mahanga 104 mm), Boudh, Dhenkanal, Kandhamala, Nayagada, Malkangiri, Kendujhar, Nuapada, Sonpur, Sundaragada, Anugola, Jajpur, Gajapati, and Puri.

Heavy overnight rains triggered by dual cyclonic circulations also left several parts of the state capital severely waterlogged on Thursday, submerging low-lying areas and flooding homes.
