Sambalpur: A final-year BTech student of VSSUT, Burla, in Odisha’s Samablpur district drowned at the fishery point on the banks of the Hirakud Reservoir on Thursday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Saswati Bhoi of Bargarh.
According to police sources, the incident took place around 4-5 pm when she slipped and fell into deep water while bathing with her friends at zero point of the dyke. Though her friends managed to pull her out of the waters, she was pronounced dead on arrival at VIMSAR.
Her family has been informed about the incident and the body will be handed over to them on Friday after postmortem, a police officer said.
The students visited the spot despite an existing ban on bathing at the location.
The VSSUT administration had recently prohibited students from visiting seven vulnerable locations, including the fishery point, following the death of a 19-year-old first-year civil engineering student of the institute while taking a bath at Athra Hazar power channel on March 13.
