Burla: A first-year engineering student of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) drowned in the power channel of Hirakud Dam at Athra Hazar under Burla police limits in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Priyanshu Prakash Behera (19) of Dhenkanal. He was pursuing civil engineering at VSSUT.
According to sources, Priyanshu along with other students went to the power channel of Hirakud dam to take a bath after playing Holi at the institute this morning. He lost control and started drifting towards deep water. He was later rescued by his friends, who then rushed him to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR). However, he was declared dead on arrival by the doctors.
