Berhampur: A 20-year-old woman allegedly attempted to set herself on fire on Saturday in Odisha’s Ganjam district, just one day after filing a rape complaint at a local police station.
According to sources, the incident occurred behind her house in Kotinada area, where she reportedly poured kerosene over herself and ignited it. She sustained around 50% burns. Her parents immediately rushed her to the nearby sub-divisional hospital, after which she was shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, where her condition is stated to be critical.
According to Kotinada police station IIC Damodar Bihari the exact circumstances leading to the suicide attempt are not yet clear. The woman had lodged the rape complaint on Friday against a man with whom she had been in a relationship since 2022, when she was minor. Her formal statement was scheduled to be recorded on Saturday, the day of the incident.
Police are investigating the incident from multiples angles, including possible involvment of the accused in the rape case in instigating her self-immolation attempt.
