Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s flagship Subhadra Direct Benefit Transfer scheme for women is showing encouraging signs of improving both household savings and consumption patterns, according to a research report by the SBI. The study suggests that direct cash transfers under the scheme are not only strengthening financial inclusion but also supporting local economic activity through increased spending.

“Empowering Women, Strengthening Odisha’s Economy flagship Subhadra DBT scheme is transforming lives by boosting financial security and economic participation. A recent SBI Research report highlights a 45% rise in savings and 28% increase in spending among beneficiaries, reflecting stronger household resilience and inclusive growth,” wrote CM Mohan Majhi on his official X handle.

The Subhadra scheme, launched in 2024, aims to provide financial assistance of Rs 50,000 over five years to eligible women between 21 and 60 years of age. Beneficiaries receive Rs 10,000 in two instalments in a year through DBT in bank accounts.

According to the research, the scheme has led to a noticeable improvement in banking habits among beneficiaries, with women maintaining greater balances in accounts.

The report indicates that the scheme is also helping boost local markets. A significant portion of the transferred money is being spent within local communities. It is helping small traders and informal businesses. Increased purchasing power among women is expected.

Government data shows that more than one crore women have been covered under the scheme, with thousands of crores transferred already.

Experts observe that such programmes, when combined with financial literacy and access to banking services, can help create economic resilience in the future among poor households and enhance economic growth in overall way.
