Odisha’s SCB To Start ECMO Treatment Of COVID Patients From August 15

Bhubaneswar: SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack will start ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) treatment for COVID-19 patients from August 15.

Director Medical Education and Training (DMET) CBK Mohanty told this to the media on Saturday.

“While nine ECMO machines have been installed at SCB, the recruitment process for manpower to operate these machines has been completed. The recruited staff were trained by a batch of health officials from Kolkata,” Mohanty said.

He said two units of machines for ECMO treatment were set up at SCB. One of the units comprises nine machines and the other has three machines.

“While three ECMO machines of the second unit will be used for the treatment of COVID patients, the six other machines will be used for the patients with post-COVID complications,” the DMET said.

ECMO machines are used for critically ill Covid patients, whose lungs are damaged and require ventilator support.
