Bhubaneswar: History has repeated itself in the land of Jagannath. Not as a stark reminder but a silver lining in the times of conflict. In 1945, Odisha’s ‘bhoomiputra’ had turned out to be a saviour for the Indonesian leaders during its independence.
He was none other than the state’s former chief minister, Biju Patnaik, who had flown the leaders out of the conflict-hit country then, which was struggling for its freedom from the Dutch army. The brave aviator, showcased his unparalleled piloting skills, to rescue the leaders and bring them to India.
After several decades, the world again witnessed such a brave stint this month. Again a brave soul from Odisha has brought relief to perhaps thousands of households during another conflict. There’s a slight twist in the tale. This time, the son from the sacred land hasn’t flown out people from a region in turmoil. It’s a story of bringing back energy to drive India’s growth story.
Captain Dheeraj Agarwal from Odisha’s Balangir district led the Indian vessel carrying several metric tonnes of gas and oil through the Strait of Homruz. The ship, Nanda Devi, was able to cross the waterway after India held talks with Iran. This is no less than a moment of pride for entire country. While the ships of several other countries are stranded there amid war in West Asia, India has managed to have its way out of what could have caused fuel shortage.
Agarwal’s family and friends in the state are rejoicing as it’s not just his homecoming but return of hope to millions of families. “We are elated for his crucial contribution to the country,” said his wife, Pooja. ‘I am proud…,” said Santosh, who had been eagerly waiting for her son.
